Unmarried fathers of Ohio like LaRose!

July 09, 2010

For most people, an order of pancakes with coffee is just a nice breakfast; but in this case, it was the beginning of an extremely informative conversation with Mr. LaRose (LaRose), regarding the problematic issues facing dads in our state.  In fact, I found him to be poignantly in tune with the various materials and topics we covered, as well as legitimately concerned about past, present and future oppression of married or unmarried fathers of Ohio.  This article will list some of the specifics covered in this successful meeting, and ultimately demonstrate the necessity for Larose to become a Senator in the 129th General Assembly of Ohio this November, 2010.

  • Initial points of interest

Though our session of exchanging ideas and thoughts, major blocks of the bill proposal submitted to the assembly on February 17, 2010 were thoroughly addressed.  In the beginning, LaRose mostly listened to my in depth explanations of the core parts of the problem, and the very reasons action needed to be taken.  It became very clear, shortly thereafter, exactly why this happened.  While he had not been properly introduced to the specifics and magnitudes of desparity in our domestic system before, as he had been that day, it appeared that he was interested in getting to the bottom of things to determine the effectiveness of the possiblities of the plan in front of him, as well as potential solutions of his own.  More about his, however, in later parts of this written piece.

A small bit of background:  LaRose and I had briefly met at a local parade called the Cherry Blossom Parade, here in Barberton, Ohio.  I expressed my interest in speaking with him about the plight of unmarried fathers in our county and state; his response was quick and decisive in the affirmative, and our meeting was promptly scheduled through his staff at headquarters.  Although it is customary for a candidate or their staff, in a political race such as this one for the senate, to arbitrarily suggest a tour of the main office to show off how busy and caring they are; what I got instead was an honest and bonifide offer to stop in and see for myself why LaRose is the clear voting choice in November, 2010.

  • Custodial/Residential parents and visitation

As can be imagined, all of these natural components of separated parents' situations were delivered in more than adequate concentrations.  During this time, I saw the highest level of amazement within LaRose, while talking about court ordered supervision.  To specifically explain such an instance, Summit County, Ohio Judges: Carol Dezso and John Quinn, along with the magistrates that work in their courts, have decided on their own volition to allow supervised visitation to mothers because of their "anxiety issues."  What this means is, a mother can show the court anxious tendencies, or the unwillingness to part through general concern for their baby, and these magistrates and judges almost automatically grant the supervision, regardless of the father's right to equal standing, experience or competence as a parent.  LaRose, it seemed, was even more convinced from this particular instance that there were further problems within the domestic system than was previously thought.

  • Additional considerations

The unfortunately common "no overnight time for fathers until 18 months" rule in Summit County (Standard Order of Visitation) was also an important topic.  To this, LaRose completely came aboard with the notion that it wasn't right.  I have talked to many legislators about parental issues, and I can definitely say that amongst the responses I have received, this response was nearly the quickest of all.  While discussing the alternatives in the submitted material, he asked many questions and showed an overall understanding of the plan.  Ultimately, he is in support of changing the current conditions of paternal rights in Ohio, and would like to proactively pursue avenues of relief for this in the Senate.

  • Conclusion

Republican Senate Candidate Frank LaRose - is someone that the children and families of Ohio shouldn't do without.  He has a simple, no nonsense approach to problem solving and can quickly come up to speed when important issues are on the table.  I was completely impressed with the fact that he admitted to having limited knowledge of this particular subject, but was eager to learn, in order to fairly assess the situation.  Straight talk from a straight shooter.  That is what I hoped for and that's what I got.  He understands the plight of unmarried fathers, unfair practices of the local and state laws pertaining to parentage, and that our children would be best served when parents and children have equal physical access to each other.  Ohio should have fair treatment for unmarried parents, where shared parenting is assumed from the time a child is born!

People of the 27th Senate District of Ohio desperately need a change!  Frank LaRose, is a man who believes in "devotion to family and service to the public" (LaRose for Senate, 2010, para. 1).  Unmarried fathers of Summit County, Ohio need Frank LaRose in the Ohio Senate come November, 2010!
